“Broken Promises” Gicleé Prints

“Broken Promises” shows four displaced Plains Indians huddled around a fire. It’s a solemn scene. It wasn’t my intention to depict any specific tribe, as this scenario could have played out in any of the tribes. As I painted, I couldn’t help but imagine what it may have been like to lose your home, possibly family members and friends, and have little or no accessible food in the middle of winter. I intentionally placed them in the open plains to suggest how vulnerable they were. The figure on the right, wrapped in a trade blanket holds in his hand a Peace Medal. These medals were typically given by military leaders as a sign of peace and friendship, however, as many who wore these medals found out, they had little or no effect in stopping military attacks. No doubt this man contemplates this as he prepares to throw his medal into the flames.
